Tiger problem

I am having difficulties installing Tiger on my laptop. It is a Powerbook G4 running 10.2.8. When I try to upgrade to Tiger, it finds errors when verifying destination disc. So I ran disc first aid and it found "incorrect number of thread records" in the catalog file, so it then runs the repair and rechecks and finds the same problem and runs the repair and rechecks and finds the same problem....

Not sure what to do. I don't want to go through the hassle of a full backup and then trying to restore everything after an erase and install. Has anyone any suggestions?

A current copy of Norton Systemworks or DiskWarrior might fix it but, equally, you may have a terminally ill HD. Whatever else you do, back up now in case things get worse.

I had backed up anyway before I tried to upgrade. And the Mac still works fine in 10.2.8. I did a google search on the error message and found some other Mac users having a similar problem, but no solution. I've posted my message now on a Mac Os X LJ community to see if that brings a response.

As ever I am no help at all, but Blake (not THE Blake, clearly) wrote a little poem to slightly distract you:

Tiger, Tiger, you are shite
In my laptop, you're not right
Now I wonder why I'd buy
An upgrade that just makes me cry

You are crap and full of lies
Your fault if my hard drive dies
Running first aid and repair
Does not help, it isn't fair

Of course he only bothered to do 2 verses, because ultimately it's your problem.

You could also try here:

http://www.apple.com/support/tiger/

This is specifically about installation:

I'm still on 9.2, so know nothing about it. Good luck!
